A report recently released by the Global Commission on Drug Policy declares the global war on drugs a complete failure and recommends that countries like the US reform their laws and decriminalize drug use. It has been estimated that America has spent over a trillion dollars fighting the war on drugs since it was started by President Nixon in 1971. A bill was recently introduced in Congress that would end the federal prohibition of marijuana and allow states to create their own laws to tax, regulate and legalize marijuana use and cultivation. Marijuana has already been decriminalized by 14 states and medical use of marijuana is allowed in 16 states. Prohibition of alcohol gave us the Mafia; illegal marijuana gave us drug cartels.
